Hoje, eu, filho da mãe, e a mãe Dona Maria vamos almoçar trivial: carne moída, couve, arroz, moranga e quiabo, feijão preto. Salada de almeirão, rúcula e tomate cereja. Arrematar com doce de leite. Deus que espere.

All my mother’s things are in their places, everything is clean and aseptic as usual, . Calm down, take it easy: Dona MARIA JOSÉ is in the kitchen right now. Let’s move on. All my mother’s memories are in their places, waiting for her to go to heaven where the infamous, starving, dishonest god will imprison her. All her cross-stitches, her oil paintings on canvases, her paintings on dishcloths, and the potted sweets and spiced meats in troughs, her smile over the sunflowers made the sun almost lose its job, but she’s generous – I said generous because she told the sun to stay and keep “shining”; You see, I didn’t conjugate it in the past or past tense, but in the present tense, because she’s there in the kitchen, with eight days to go before she, still cheerful, completes 92 years of an almost unreal existence, for so much work, children numbering ten, plus a thousand grandchildren and great-grandchildren and great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren, this Maria is truly an amazement, she’s like a child, she doesn’t rest, and if she doesn’t have a job, she invents. This is the legacy of my Mother Maria José, with a guaranteed place in heaven; and so it is that God, thief of Mothers, this contumacious schemer, a guy who is as pure an insult to life as this unqualified man is, let him wait another 92 years. Today, me and my mother Maria José are having a trivial lunch: minced beef, cabbage, rice, strawberries and okra, black beans. Salad of lettuce, arugula and tomatoes. Top it off with dulce de leche. May God wait.
